I think any NVIDIA works on linux, but then again, I could be mistaken.

Re: graphic card
idk how good the 640M runs. But I think if your laptop has optimus you might need to use ironhide or bumblebee for the switchable graphics to work.
For me, I haven't been able to get either to work on mine (have a gt 420m with optimus) so I've been stuck with intel graphics on linux since my bios doesn't have options to disable one of the cards

Other games I play:
Tribes Ascend- Kaye ; HoN- Kaye23 ; STO- Kaye, Kae ; BF3- KayeAurelius ; Neverwinter- Kaye, Kae, Kay
Blacklight Retribution- Kaelin(US/AU), Kaye(EU)

Re: graphic card
From what I've heard the current gen of Nvidia hardware has some issues, they would likely be hammered out by the time the fall distro release cycle comes along though.
AMD apparently has had the same problem this time around.
Though if yo want to use the Gallium3D drivers the best cards you can use are the HD6800 series, anything faster doesn't work yet.

I suggest you go to the Regnum Online Forum. There you can receive more extensive feedback about Linux and graphic card than we can provide here.
